Wnter Journey

Whyalla
Point Lowly
Fitzgerald Bay

We are starting to work out where we are around Whyalla, have found the best shopping and fuel stops. We drove through the city, northwards, back towards Port Augusta, turning right to the coast and Point Lowly not far away.

Santos on Port Bonython

Another long straight road took us past the massive Santos plant and pier which seemed to go half way across the Spencer Gulf and into the small settlement of Point Lowly.
The processing plant receives a mixture of condensate, crude oil, propane and butane which is processed in distillation towers and molecular sieves to produce various products. These products, such as naphtha, crude oil, propane and butane, are stored in large tanks before being shipped to customers.
There's a beautiful old lighthouse on the point surrounded by small homes and camping areas. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority turned off the lighthouse in 1993 saying it was no longer needed. In 1995 the Whyalla City Council purchased it back and reactivated the light.

A beautiful spot on the point

A part of the designated camping area has picnic tables, toilets and cold showers for $10 a night. It was a beautiful place, we sat and enjoyed the view while we had our morning coffee break.

The camping area looks out over the Spencer Gulf. From here you
have a wonderful view of the Southern Flinders Ranges

A stony beach. Trev says it's not a beach unless it has sand!

Fitzgerald Bay is further north from Lowly Point is a wonderful free camping place right on the unique slate and shingle coastal dunes.
A geological marvel awaits you at Fitzgerald Bay. The stranded shingle ridges are one of only two known occurrences in the world.
Nothing is provided for campers here, no toilets and no water.

See the Southern Flinders ranges in the distance.

Later in the day we stopped and saw the Whyalla a decommissioned naval training ship which sits next to the tourist info centre on the highway at the entrance to the city it was named after.

Waiting for the flood!
