Stawell Vic
We left home last Monday
and fortunately were able to pack up and leave when it was dry. The
rain started just the other side of Ringwood and then we coped the
full force of the forecast storms and rain. Trev struggled through
the horrendous conditions valiantly taking us to the other side of
the city and onto the Western freeway safely.
By the time we reached the
famous town of Stawell about 4 hours later we saw some blue skies
which gave us hope that travelling west in winter was a good idea.
Before checking into the
caravan park we explored the deserted town making our way towards
Central Park which houses the Stawell Gift Hall of fame and lots of
other memorabilia. Tempting as it was, we decided not to try and
better the record on the race track. The town has lots of beautiful
old houses and churches along with the usual shops and supermarkets
that would be especially needed as the population swells over Easter
when the Gift is run.

Stawell Caravan Park was
comfortable and very accessible. We were able to get a large site so were able to stay hooked up overnight. The amenities were
clean with lots of instant hot water. It's situated beside a
picturesque lake, home to loads of ducks and water birds.
Not a bad view to wake up to |

We like our relaxing
mornings so rolled out of Stawell around 10. We continued along the
Western Highway through Nhil on through Bordertown to Keith. We
passed the Grampians and the Big Koala and some real life white
kangaroos.
The caravan park was
unattended when we arrived so we found a site, I loved the fact that
people are trusted to use the honesty box for the fees. The park is
close to the town, very tidy with a good camp kitchen, free barbecues
and spotless modern amenities.
Driving further west, we saw the incredible Silo Murals at Coonalpyn, passed Tailem Bend, before crossing the Murray River at Murray Bridge, we then continued on through Mt. Pleasant and Springton before finding the
Big 4 Barossa at Nurioopta. We will make our base here for the next 5
days.
6 Primary school children were chosen to have their portraits painted on the silos. |
